2/21/2024 0 Comments Armada naval sudamericanaIt will be the largest trial to date in Argentina. Centered on crimes committed at the Superior School of Mechanics of the Navy (ESMA) from 1976 to 1983, a period during which approximately 30,000 people were killed in Argentina, the trial will involve 88 defendants and 800 victims. On November 28th 2012, the most significant trial in Argentinian history commenced. The genocidal process affects, in different ways, the whole society where it is perpetrated. It is not our intention, by no means, to match the experiences of those who suffered the torture, the captivity and the horror in their own bodies to those who did not go through them. This is why when we mention the “affected” we are referring to those detained in torture centers and to the disappeared as well as to their families, their loved ones, their peers, and younger generations. In this way, we take into account not only those who were confined in detention centers but also the whole society. We believe that when studying a case where a genocide has been perpetrated, the most suitable term is “ person affected by the genocide” instead of “victim”. In the trial where the crimes committed at the ESMA clandestine detention, torture and extermination center are being tried, 67 defendants have been prosecuted for the offenses committed against 789 “victims”. One of these is a word that might be equivocal: “victim”. We find it is extremely important to explain the meaning of some terms that will appear frequently in this blog, to avoid misunderstandings or ambiguities.
